A BLOG ABOUT MOST THINGS HIP-HOP AND ARTS-RELATED

AN EXPLANATION:

WHAT IS DOOMBAP?
Doombap is a collective of highly trained, definitively skilled, and overly prolific multi-talented artists. Each on a path to leave their respective marks, collectively and individually, on the cultural and musical art form, that we currently call Hip Hop. No, it is not dead.

Though the heart of their movement falls largely in the Hip-Hop subgenre of “Boom Bap,” they count infinite influences in all aspects of Hip-Hop; including it’s further reaching roots planted as far back as the 1950’s with the parallel evolutions of Blues, Jazz, Soul, and later, Fusion and Funk. If truth be told, any and all music may be included. Inspiration comes in many forms!

To look backward, is often the best way to realize the importance of the seeds which will grow into the future. However, to be stuck in the past,
is to deny that, what has yet to come. “The wisest man is the bridge between yesterday and tomorrow.”

WHY CHOOSE DOOMBAP?
As a collective, Doombap is quite a formidable wall of sound. As individuals, Dooombap, in all of it’s varied combinations, represents a wide array of moods, sounds, and textures.
Strength lies not only in numbers but also it’s versatility.
As each member has decades of experience both in studio and live, there is no doubt that any one of them can move the crowd. No situation is foreign nor intimidating. Confidence is an understatement. Whether sound system, traditional dj/mc combinations, or beatmaking, DOOMBAP has the evening or event covered well!
You can’t lose when you are in good hands; especially when there are 12 of them.

WHERE IS DOOMBAP?
The members, except for Distantstarr in Philadelphia, and Davu in Berlin, are all based in, and around Paris.

WHEN WAS DOOMBAP FOUNDED?
The crew, had been a vision for founding member Days since 2010. Physically, DOOMBAP has existed since mid-2019. This fact is important, as it will allow for the audience to grow alongside the crew, in relation to Days’ arrival in France from Chicago. With history’s sudden turn of events, we can all appreciate the parallels of our own realities connecting to the output of music in the Doombap camp. We have been creating soundtracks for our lives, and, in the very least, we can safely say, life, as with Doombap’s music, has been anything but ordinary for the last decade. Shared experiences are always the best though, so everyone wins. There is nothing in life like collective moments of evolution. DOOMBAP is in this for the long. “Check us now or later. We’ve been waiting for you, confidently and patiently.”

DAVU FLINT

DAVU FLINT

Raised in a prominent Pittsburgh jazz family; poet, emcee, producer, and instrumentalist, Davu Flint treats music as literature or film, creating idiosyncratic works of aural art, crafting a unique and compelling collection of confessions and observations. His music is autobiographical, his technique is dazzling, and his vision is pure.
Notably so, having already worked with Jesus Crise, at a distance, on a recent gem that simply must be heard; “Davu killed it.”
Davu is on another level altogether.

DAYS

MORE ABOUT DAYS:

Days is an unstrict purist and a long-term participant in all the elements of the culture of Hip-Hop, as well as, today being a thriving, and often struggling, musician in a different land. From the city of wind to the city of lights.

Stateside, from 2000 to the present, he had, and would eventually share song featurings, tours, studio time, lodges and stages with a countless list of modern-day luminaries. Luminaries in music, such as, Cody Chestnut, Dave of De La Soul, Prince Po (Organized Konfusion), Slim Kid Tre (Pharcyde), Speech (Arrested Development), Riddlore (CVE), Myka Nyne (Freestyle Fellowship), DJ Rhettmatic (Beat Junkies), Illogic, Atmosphere (Rhymesayers), Abstract Rude (Project Blowed), DJ Vadim, Homeboy Sandman, Tableek (Maspyke), Verbal Kent, members of C2C (DMC Champions), Truth Enola, Defari (Dialated Peoples), and countless other legends. Everyone’s past makes no sense, until you can have access to a bird’s eye view.

In 2010, having reassessed his life’s path, Days continued producing music except, this time, he found himself in a new scene and carelessly without a network. Thankfully, Danny at The Find Magazine in Amsterdam, who had heard and enjoyed Days’ previous work back in Chicago in 2005 as one-half of Modill, was gracious enough to impart some connections. With the spirit of the hustle that every born Chicagoan is blessed with, Days (then still known as RacecaR) reinvented himself and sparked another zenith in an already long career. He then worked inside several projects and featurings with veteran French Jazz and Hip-Hop. Lord Faz, Pumpkin, Vin’s Da Cuero, Mentalow Records, Kohndo, Diazott, Alakazam (Zulu Nation King’s Siroko and Jow-L), DJ ATOM, C2C, Soul Square, Sax Machine (*still active), DJ Prof&cy, DJ Engym, ODT, Agata, Asagaya, Submass Crew, Masta Conga, Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra, Beat tribe Anthropoworks, producers J-Zen, Clem Beats, LeKäR, ICBM, LRS, D-os, Doombap, Lordss87, Jesus Crise, Jostereo, The Waxidermist, Paris DJ’s, Ethio Jazz legends Akale Wube, Saxophonist Etienne DeLaSayette, renowned drummer Anne Paceo, legendary poet/emcee/genius Mike Ladd, RP3:Remi Panossian Trio, Panam Panic, Horndogz, Chlorine Free, Jordan Phillipe, Ulrich Forman, award-winning pianist Cedric Hanriot, The Big Hustle, Leon Newars, Stracho Temelkovski, legendary drummer Tony Allen, legendary guitarist Kologbo Oghene,
and Roforofo Jazz, for now. However, tomorrow is always a new Days…

Born on February 1983 in New York, Zenover is a renowned emcee/producer currently residing in the Philadelphia area.

Zenover is fast becoming one of the most respected artists in underground Hip Hop. Between acclaimed solo projects and collaborative efforts as StarrSkream (with Parisian producer Le N?ko) and MAGR (alongside fellow emcee Al Mighty), Zenover has been busy carving a niche for himself in the scene that combines classic Hip Hop aesthetics and forward thinking production. As well, Zenover has paired his razor-sharp lyrics with even sharper hands in the chambers of beatmaking. In recent years, he has rained down a multitude of fresh and soulful releases via his Bandcamp. With 2024, the flood is far from over. JESUS CRISE

Born at the time when vinyl was still the norm, Jesus Crise is an experienced Beatmaker/Turntablist. Imagine the ancient era of the walkman and the advent and death of the mini disk. Envision DAT recordings, rappers with dead foxes on their head, and radios with real-life programmers! That is to say, this man has seen his share of both bullshit, and brilliance.

Fortunately, the 70’s made him spend the 80’s, without too much trouble getting to the 90’s, and the distinct changes in Hip Hop that would occur at this juncture!
Jesus Crise speaks thru a mix of beats and huge samples or, for argument’s sake, the much lesser known.
He has been rightfully given his own hands as tools.
In both, turntablism and scratching, he has been given his own vast land to explore. This is a land publicly explored by all… all strangers and brothers in the same art, in an intimate, mind-altering conversation.

At the end of the 90’s, he co-founded a number of groups, began an obsessive amount of beatmaking, worked his techniques, and officiated, in all, his projects with a dada tendency (he decides that where he will be allowed to scratch, he must go!).
Arriving in 2016, Jesus sees the end of the loop, and leaves for a different measure … because in the end, we always return to the beginning, and we push even further; it is THE tenant of Hip Hop!

Jesus Crise is his name as beatmaker, and Mr. Tos is his tag as turntablist. He can also be uniquely credited for the creation of the phrase, “Dooombap.”
A genius, nodding just on the better side of madness.
“Once you have had a taste, your world will change.”

JOSTEREO

JOSTEREO

Influenced by life,
Jostereo loves to go left of the beaten path.
Self-taught Beatmaker, sound fighter, and born arranger, Jostereo explores the world(s), seperating and reconnecting dissimilar sources to draw his inspirations.
He uncovers new possibilities and concepts previously un-thought and unheard.
He has worked with an international array of guest collaborators including Thavius Beck, Riddlore (CVE, Project Blowed), Bluebird, Baracuda, Noah23, Maintenance Crew, Radius (ETC Records), and others.
Jostereo stands out with a purely concentrated high level of forward thinking eclectic sound.

The type of sound that stays with you after the song has ended, echoing a simple phrase softly in your ear, over and over….”it bumps!”

THE WAXIDERMIST

The Waxidermist

The Waxidermist has a touch for everything. Already a talented bassist and double bassist, he has met the road with Guts, Erik Truffaz, The Herbalizer, ASM, Elodie Rama and Anna Kova, whom he currently accompanies.
He is also a Beatmaker and largely passionate of vinyl. His primary influences are Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul and Jazz, but he is constantly unearthing some eclectic rare groove, sourced from a pure musical knowledge attained only by those who have put in the time digging.

He has most recently released his first EP and album, “The Origami Case” to a nice amount of fanfare including of all people, Will Smith!?!
The Waxidermist delivers up a mixture of both urban groove and airy melodies, in the true spirit of Hip-Hop.
The follow-up to The Origami Case, Tribe, will be out this year.
“The Waxidermist has been ready to infect the world, and he has a posse.”
